OK, so if you’re a regular reader of this blog you might know that growing up I watched every episode of MacGyver because my mom was in love with the show. So, seeing the recurring MacGruber sketches on Saturday Night Live has always been fun for me, ever since Will Forte first played the character on SNL in 2006. But recently I found out that they are turning MacGruber, the SNL Macgyver parody character into a full feature length film! My gut tells me that this movie will be a big pile of hot poop but that won’t stop me from checking it out in the theaters. I admit, I have a soft spot for MacGruber.
In any case, check out this MacGruber tee from … gasp … Cafe Press. Hopefully once the movie comes out we’ll see better merchandise on the market, but until then, this is what we’ve got. Oh, and be sure to check out the trailer and let me know what you think!
Man, how I wish I could be in Massachusetts come this Saturday! Johnny Cupcakes will be hosting movie night at the Coolidge Corner Theater. Tickets are on sale now for $7.75. It’ll be a midnight (11:55pm to be exact) showing so be sure to get some rest beforehand! Who doesn’t love Back To The Future and vintage Michael J. Fox? Oh, and he promises some limited edition tees – that’s always fun! Here’s the details:
Recently I have teamed up with the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline / Boston. Once a month I will be presenting one of my favorite films from my childhood. Not only will it be a fun, memorable, older movie – but sometimes there will be trivia, raffles, games, contests, prizes, and even some limited edition Johnny Cupcakes movie themed t-shirts. Some of which you can only purchase at the theater during my once a month events. Every showing and its random themes etc, will be different from the next. Join Johnny on Saturday January 24th at 11:55 PM (midnight) to see Back To The Future on the big screen for only $7.75 We even got a hold of the original movie reel from back in the day!
On of my favorite indie designers is, without doubt, Olly Moss. The designer of the famous Spoilt tee at Threadless, Olly has been busy creating some awesome vintage style poster art of popular movies like The Deer Hunter, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and American History X. I love this stuff, as it reminds of one of my old passions. Make more Olly, make more!
Those of you who saw that ad on eBay regarding visiting the set of Spider-Man 4, but was hesistent to place a bid, might kick themselves (auction went for $28,100) when they find out Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi have reportedly been locked in for Spider-Man 4 and potentially Spider-Man 5. As reported first on Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, the popular actor and director will be back for the 3rd and 4th sequel in the hugely successful Spider-Man franchise. To my chagrin, Sony wants Kirsten Dunst back to play the part of Mary Jane, but not deal has been made thus far.
Principal photography for James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Rundown) penned Spider-Man 4 will not begin until next fall, in time for a May 2011 release. Sony is reportedly pushing to have Spider-Man 4 and 5 shot back to back, much like what Disney did with The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.Â
There has also been talk of who the main villain may be in Spider-Man 4. Although no one has officially signed on for a villain role in Spider-Man 4, most of the speculation points to Dylan Baker’s character of Dr. Curt Connors (Peter Parker’s college professor), who appeared in Spider-Man 3. Comic afficionado’s know that Dr. Connors turns into Dr. Lizard in comic books. Will we see the Lizard in Spider-Man 4? Other rumored villains include Black Cat, Vulture and Carnage, but some insiders think that these villains might be saved for a possible Venom spin-off.Â
Are you guys excited for a back-to-back Spider-Man 4 and 5? Or are you guys web slinging hopeless romantic?
Now I know that in the past I’ve mentioned that I think Bryan Singer should be allowed to continue the Superman series he started with 2006′s Superman Returns, but, the chances of that happening is looking pretty grim. Out goes Singer’s Man of Steel and in come Millar’s Superman trilogy, possibly.Â
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for Singer continuing what he started, but if Millar were given a chance to reboot or re-invent the franchise I would be all for it. Mark Miller, just in case  you’re not familiar with him, is the man behind Wanted, you know that summer blockbuster with Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. Millar actually wrote the original Wanted comics and has done a ton of work within the different comic universes, including the big guns, DC and Marvel.Â
In 2003 he wrote the critically acclaimed Superman: Red Sun, the premises of which was built on the question of what would things be like if Superman were raised in the Soviet Union. I wouldn’t care to see Soviet Superman on the big screen, but I do think that Millar has the potential to bring something new to the Superman franchise and in effect re-energize it.
Having said that, MIllar has gone on record in a recent interview with G4 and has said that he already has “plans” to make a Superman trilogy, that would be shot back to back much like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a big Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. And hopefully release them one year after another,†continued Millar. “If it works out, we’ll have to start shooting next summer.â€
Millar has even been reported as saying his vision of Superman is:
“Superman for the 21st Century, keeping everything we adore, but starting from scratch and making the kids love it as much as the 30-somethings.â€
So it looks like the Superman saga continues. And let’s not forget, Mark Millar is a writer and not a movie director, so there is a possibility of Singer and Millar working together. The possibility of this happening, especially with Singer’s already existing vision, is slight to zero. But imagine for a moment what a creative combination that would make, much like the Nolan-Goyer combo they’ve got going for the Batman franchise.Â
A user by the name of CiscoOreo has been uploading some pretty spot on Heath Ledger Joker impersonations. If you look away from the video and just listen to the audio, you’d think it was Heath himself. Pretty cool.
Well, I mentioned earlier last week that Cher was rumored to be cast as the next Catwoman. Fortunately, it looks like those casting rumors have been debunked! Warner Bros. representative has officially stated that ”those casting rumors are untrue.” Thank goodness, watching an aged Catwoman purrring on the big screen in the final installation of Nolan’s Batman series would have NOT have been a prrrr-fect ending to a thus far perfect series of films.
I’ve already discussed a bit here why I think Catwoman should be passed on for another quality villain, but should Nolan decide to bring her back for a third time to the big screen then these would be my top 3 choices of actresses to play The Cat.
1. Angelina Jole. This one is a no-brainer. She looks perfect for the role and imagine how she would look in that Catwoman suit (no, not the disastrous Halle Berry version).
2. Eva Green. She played the nice girl turned naughty girl, Vesper Lynd, in 2006′s Casino Royale. She’s fresh and she’s young and I think Nolan would have a lot to work with should he pick Green.
3. Hilary Swank. Having won two academy awards, she’s definitely got the acting chomps to pull off the role as the expert burglar. She doesn’t have that sexy look of an Angelina Jolie, but she does scream female empowerment, which is what Catwoman is all about. If Nolan were to portray a Batman: Year One type Catwoman than I think Swank would fit the bill.Â
Who do you guys think would be the perfect Catwoman?
Check out Robin (played by Justin Long aka the Mac guy in those I’m a Mac commercials) get cock blocked by Batman (played by Sam Rockwell of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind fame). This video went viral this past year (first appeared at the 2005 Fantasia Film Festival) and only now I’ve stumbled across it!
Anyhow, it appears that they are planning a sequel to “Robin’s Big Date.” “We still want to do a sequel to that,†said Rockwell. “Someone wants to produce it. Somebody wants to give us some money to do it. It’s under wraps and top secret but there would be a few more superheroes and super-villains involved. And some dating prospects.â€Â
The Telegraph (UK Newspaper) reported yesterday that Christopher Nolan is seeking Cher to play Catwoman in the final installment of Nolan’s Batman trilogy, provisionally named The Caped Crusader.Â
First of all, WTF. Cher? Are you out of your mind, Mr. Nolan, sir. Understandably your vision of the Batman universe thus far has been spot on. You’ve masterfully rebooted characters that Joel Schumacher so easily butchered in the 90′s. But Cher? According to the Telegraph, a studio exec has mentioned that Nolan would like Cher to portray Catwoman as a “vamp in her twilight years.” Even though I loved Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, the though of Cher playing Catwoman is very hard to swallow. Please don’t fuck this up Warner Bros..
A more appropriate choice, would definitely have to be Angelina Jolie. It has already been reported that Ms. Pitt has inquired about the role and is very interested. Would Ms. Pitt make a great Selina Kyle? I think hell yeah. I think she would own that role.
Having said that, does the Nolan series really need Catwoman in the final film? Sure she brings name recognition but she’s been done so many times before, sometimes good (Michelle Pfeiffer) and sometimes horrible (Halle Berry). Nolan, how about you resurrect other worthy Batman villains. If you’re keen on having a female baddy then how about Harley Quinn? Or how about Hugo Strange or even Bane (Schumacher’s version = ewwww)?
