Michael Mina and Foie Gras

Our fine dining selection for San Francisco included a trip to the highly rated Michael Mina Restaurant. All I have to say is: interesting flavors. Oh, and I had my first taste of foie gras. Definitely an eye opener. I don’t have a picture, but, Wikipedia does have a description:

Foie gras (pronounced /fwɑːˈgrɑː/ in English; French for “fat liver”) is “the liver of aduck or a goose that has been specially fattened by gavage” (as defined by French law[1]).

Foie gras is one of the most popular and well-known delicacies in French cuisineand its flavour is described as rich, buttery, and delicate, unlike that of a regular duck or goose liver. Foie gras can be sold whole, or prepared into mousse, parfait, or pâté (the lowest quality), and is typically served as an accompaniment to another food item, such as toast or steak.

The technique of gavage dates as far back as 2500 BCE, when the ancient Egyptians began keeping birds for food and deliberately fattened the birds through force-feeding.[2] Today, France is by far the largest producer and consumer of foie gras, though it is produced and consumed worldwide, particularly in other European nations, the United States, and China.

Gavage-based foie gras production is controversial, due to the force feeding procedure, and the possible health consequences of an enlarged liver, and a number of countries and other jurisdictions have laws against force feeding or the sale of foie gras due to how it is traditionally produced….


Golden Gate Bridge Photos

It took three bus transfers, but we got there. On our way there we visited Golden Gate Park which included the Japanese Tea Garden and the de Young Art Museum, then we headed to the Legion of Honor. It’s a good thing we didn’t follow the original plan and walk from Golden Gate Park to the Legion of Honor because that would have been an unbearable trek!

The Golden Gate Bridge was interesting, to say the least. Talk about grid lock traffic! Because of a head on collision, all cars on the bridge were not moving. People even turned their engines off, came out of their cars and enjoyed the view. And the view was indeed awesome. The structure itself is incredible. Huge is an understatement. It was definitely worth the trouble finding our way there! 

Just Arrived in San Francisco!

It was colder than I expected! And of course, I flew in shorts and a t-shirt! The nippy air was a nice surprise. Nonetheless, we’re here and we’re excited to get this vacation started! Here are some pics of the place that we’re staying at:

The doorman that greeted us had quite a stern look on his face, but then when he found out that we were from Hawaii he started chatting about the Turtle Bay Resort. He asked if I had ever been there (of course), and then described how stunning Hawaii looked on film (he just saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall). 

I am pretty excited that the hotel has a fitness room! Yay for that. I can do some cardio in the morning, to prep for even more cardio (via trekking the famous San Francisco hills). Oh, and the hotel also offers complimentary DVD’s – then again, I don’t intend on spending much time in doors but the option of free DVD’s is nice! The room that we are staying in is very spacious, even the bathroom is roomy.
